Former President and MP for Mid-Machangolhi constituency, Mohamed Nasheed has been elected by as the MDP candidate for the Speaker of Parliament.

The selection was made at a special meeting of the party at Dharubaaruge tonight.

The former President was nominated as a candidate by the MP for the North Hithadhoo constituency, Mohamed Aslam and it was supported by the MP for Vilushi constituency, Hassan Afeef.

While a campaign of a candidate for the position was held before the meeting began, the two leading candidates were MPs Aslam and Afeef.

Former President Nasheed was elected with the unanimous of all 64 members who took part in the vote. And a whip-line was also issued and elected a Deputy Speaker of Parliament.

MDP nominated the MP for North Galolhu constituency, Eva Abdulla for the Deputy Speaker of Parliament. She was also the only candidate for the position.
