A case has been filed against Former Chief of Defence Force Major General Ahmed Shiyam for abusing his official position. The case centred on accusations that Shiyam had allowed his father to stay in the Coast Guard's Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC) building in Villimale', a facility typically reserved for official guests.

The state had alleged that Shiyam's father had been residing in the MRCC since 2017, which the prosecution argued was an inappropriate use of the facility. However, after reviewing the case, Judge Aminath Azlifa ruled on October 1, 2024, that the evidence presented by the state was insufficient to support the charges.

The judge stated that it was not proven that Shiyam's father had been residing there for an extended period, as there was no specific timeframe set by the army regarding how long family members or invited guests could stay in the MRCC. The procedure in place allowed for approved individuals to be accommodated, and it was not clear whether Shiyam’s father had stayed beyond what was considered normal under the circumstances.

In light of this, the court found that the state had failed to establish that Shiyam had abused his position, leading to the dismissal of the charges. Despite this ruling, the state filed an appeal with the High Court on December 29, though the court has not yet taken action on the appeal.
