The Civil Court has ordered former Vice President Ahmed Adeeb Abdul Ghafoor to pay a fine of MVR 1 million to the state within one month.
In connection with the MMPRC corruption case, the Criminal Court had sentenced Adeeb to 20 years in prison and fined him MVR million in October 2020, after finding him guilty of charges filed by the state. Of that fine, Adeeb still owes MVR 1 million.
As Adeeb had not paid the money owed to the state as per the Criminal Court's verdict, the Attorney General's Office filed a case with the Civil Court seeking enforcement of the judgment.
In its verdict yesterday, the Civil Court stated that since Adeeb has not paid the money owed to the state, he is ordered to pay the remaining MVR million to the Maldives Inland Revenue Authority (MIRA) within one month starting from yesterday. The court also ordered Adeeb to respect the Criminal Court's judgment.
Seven charges filed by the state against Adeeb have been proven. These include two charges of involvement in embezzlement, two charges of money laundering, one charge of misuse of official capacity, one charge of using influence of position to obtain undue advantage, and one charge of obtaining undue advantage through influence of position.
Adeeb was sentenced according to a plea agreement signed between him and the state on September 25, 2019, which included reduced sentences. The plea agreement covered two charges of involvement in embezzlement, three corruption charges, and two money laundering charges.
Although Adeeb was sentenced to 20 years in prison after being found guilty of these charges, he was released on November 13, 2023, following a clemency granted by former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih towards the end of his presidency.
