Managing Director of Maldives Water and Sewerage Company (MWSC), Abdul Matheen Mohamed, announced plans to increase water production capacity in Malé and Hulhumalé by 30 percent.
Speaking on state media PSM, Matheen stated that new water generation plants are being acquired, allowing each city to produce an additional 5,000 tonnes of water. The new plants are expected to be operational by 2025.
He also revealed efforts to double water storage capacity in both Malé and Hulhumalé, ensuring better preparedness for emergencies. However, he highlighted challenges due to lack of cooperation from some agencies and urged relevant authorities to support MWSC’s initiatives to improve water services for the public.
Matheen added that MWSC has begun working towards their goals despite delays caused by uncooperative agencies.
He also mentioned that the long-delayed construction of a pump station to connect water pipelines across the Sinamalé Bridge is underway. Once completed, the station will enable the transfer of up to 800 tonnes of water per hour between Malé and Hulhumalé, significantly improving water supply efficiency.
By 2025, MWSC aims to generate 10,000 tonnes of water daily, ensuring a robust water supply system for Malé and Hulhumalé residents.
