The Washington Post has reported that India attempted to have President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu's government removed, by attempting to bribe members of his parliament to impeach him.

In a report published by the Washington Post, it stated that India's intelligence agency, the Research and Analysis Wing (RAW), had consulted with opposition political leaders to overthrow President Muizzu's government. It also said that a plan called the "Democratic Renewal Initiative" had been made for this purpose.

The Washington Post said that the plan included bribing 40 members of the People's Majlis (Parliament), bribing ten senior officers from the military and police, and bribing three notorious gangs in the Maldives.

The report also stated that consultations were held with India to obtain the USD 6 million needed to implement the plan. However, it said that India refused to provide the money when things didn't go according to plan.

According to the newspaper, India is concerned about China's growing power in the Indian Ocean.

The newspaper further stated that India is working to strengthen its relationship with the Maldives and has decided to provide assistance and cooperation to the government.

Neither the Indian government nor the Maldivian government has yet commented on this report by the Washington Post.
