Ministry of Agriculture and Animal Welfare has expressed concern over the increasing reports of stray cats being tortured, injured, and killed in some islands of the Maldives.

In a statement, the Ministry called on the public to stop such acts, emphasising that animal cruelty violates basic principles of humanity and international animal health standards. It highlighted the importance of following the guidelines of the World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH), which prioritises the welfare of animals.

The Ministry noted that abandoned pet cats often struggle to survive without consistent care, becoming more reliant on human interaction. While stray animals may sometimes pose risks, the Ministry stressed that this does not justify mistreatment or abuse.

Islamic teachings also encourage kindness towards animals, the Ministry reminded, urging the public to show compassion and treat animals responsibly.

To address the issue, the Ministry plans to assess the condition of stray cats across the Maldives, including in Malé. Additionally, efforts are underway to fully operationalise Olhu Hiyaa, a government-run pet care facility in Malé, to manage the growing stray cat population and ensure their welfare.
