Maldives Police Service has reported that nine people have been fined for using vapes since the ban was implemented.
In a message sent to the media today, the police stated that nine individuals were fined a total of MVR 50,000. They also mentioned that one person was fined an additional MVR 10,000 for using an electronic cigarette while riding a motorcycle.
With the amendment to the Tobacco Control Act, the sale, free distribution, and use of vapes, vaping devices, and electronic cigarettes have been banned in the Maldives since the 15th of this month. It is also prohibited to import electronic cigarettes, vaping devices, and products designed for use with these items.
If such items are imported, a fine of MVR 50,000 will be imposed, with an additional MVR 10,000 for each electronic cigarette or vaping device imported.
Selling such devices or products will result in a fine of MVR 20,000, with an additional MVR 10,000 for each item sold. Distributing such devices or products for free will incur a fine of MVR 10,000.
If such devices or products are sold or distributed for free to a minor, an additional fine of MVR 50,000 will be imposed. Using such products in the Maldives will result in a fine of MVR 5,000.
