Minister of State for Tourism Mohamed Nihad has been suspended, as confirmed by the President's Office spokesperson Heena Waleed.
The suspension comes following controversial remarks made by Nihad during a party meeting of the Progressive National Congress (PNC).
At the meeting, Nihad alleged that the main opposition party, the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), was planning a terrorist attack aimed at disrupting the country’s tourism sector, a critical pillar of the Maldivian economy. He claimed the alleged attack was intended to undermine government efforts in Addu and deter foreign investments.
Nihad’s comments sparked widespread criticism, with many, including the MDP, calling for an inquiry. The MDP stated that such remarks could damage the reputation of the tourism industry, which is vital to the Maldives’ economy.
Further details about the suspension or any potential investigation into the matter have not been disclosed.
