Former President and Speaker of the Parliament, Mohamed Nasheed, has alleged that the previous administration of President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih unfairly prepared the list for the "Binveriya" scheme.
Nasheed’s remarks come amid an ongoing investigation into the improper allocation of land under the scheme. Allegations have surfaced against Fazeel Rasheed, brother of former Housing Development Corporation (HDC) Managing Director Ibrahim Fazul Rasheed, for obtaining land in violation of the rules.
The police and the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) are investigating the case. Passports of 20 individuals, including Fazeel and Fazul, have been seized, and 15 HDC employees have been suspended to facilitate the probe.
In a post on X, Nasheed highlighted past issues of unfair land allocation and expressed hope for a thorough investigation. He noted that HDC leadership had been reshuffled, with Mauroof Jameel now serving as Managing Director, to address the situation.
The controversy began when Fazeel sought permission from HDC in June to construct a wall on a plot of land he claimed to own. However, the Housing Ministry had earlier ruled that Fazil was ineligible under the scheme. Documents provided by Fazeel, allegedly to validate his claim, are suspected to be forged.
HDC forwarded the case to the Housing Ministry for verification. Meanwhile, a leaked letter on social media, purportedly from the ministry, stated that neither Fazeel nor another applicant, Abdul Majeed Mahir, had applied for land under the scheme.
Following the incident, the Male’ Water and Sewerage Company (MWSC) suspended Fazeel Rasheed from his position as Deputy Managing Director.
The Prosecutor General, Abbas Shareef, has directed the police and ACC to conduct a criminal investigation into the case, ensuring accountability in the land allocation process.
