Managing Director of the Regional Airports Company, Ahmed Mubeen, has announced that 77 percent of the work on Hanimaadhoo International Airport is finished.
Speaking on the state media programme Raajje Miadhu, he shared updates on the progress of the USD 136 million project, which is funded by the Exim Bank of India.
Key milestones include the completion of the new 2.7-kilometre runway and significant progress on other facilities. Mubeen highlighted that 88 percent of the control tower and 90 percent of the cargo building are complete, while work on the passenger terminal and hangar is advancing quickly. The airport will also feature fuel storage tanks, a large fuel jetty, and new vehicles, including fire trucks and ground-handling equipment.
Once finished, the airport will handle larger aircraft like Airbus A320s and Boeing 737s and accommodate up to 1.3 million passengers annually. Despite delays caused by rain, Mubeen praised the project’s progress and credited guidance from President Dr Mohamed Muizzu.
The Hanimaadhoo International Airport is set to become a major travel hub, boosting tourism and improving connectivity in the Maldives’ northern region.
