Police have urged the public to share any information that could assist in the investigation into Thursday’s fire that devastated the buildings that houses three ministries and surrounding areas.

In a statement, police urged anyone with relevant details to contact the Major Crime Investigation Department at 9911099.

The fire destroyed the Housing and Construction Ministries, which shared the same building, and severely damaged parts of the Environment Ministry, located in the adjacent Green Building. All three ministries are now operating temporarily from Dharubaaruge.

Speaking at a press conference outside Dharubaaruge on Saturday, Police Commissioner Ali Shujau assured the public of a thorough investigation. He announced that an international team would be brought in to assist with the inquiry.

“We are coordinating with relevant agencies to ensure this team joins our investigators within two to three days,” he said.

The Commissioner emphasised the importance of uncovering the cause of the fire to address public concerns and prevent similar incidents in the future.

The police forensic team has been deployed to the site to collect samples and evidence, including CCTV footage from the area. Statements are also being recorded from witnesses, including motorists who were nearby at the time.

Meanwhile, a complaint has been filed with the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Security Services, alleging negligence by the MNDF in their handling of the fire.

Investigations are ongoing, and authorities continue to appeal for public cooperation.
