Parliament has passed a resolution directing the Prosecutor General to launch a criminal investigation into former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, former Economic Minister Fayyaz Ismail, and former Minister of the President’s Office Ali Siyam.
The resolution, proposed by PNC MP Mohamed Mamdooh, focuses on compensation payments made during the previous administration and was adopted without amendments to the Finance Committee's report.
The report accuses the three former officials of misusing state funds and resources and acting against the state’s interests. It claims that Ibrahim Mohamed Solih and Ali Shyam, as co-chairs of the Economic Council, were involved in questionable agreements, while Fayyaz Ismail allegedly facilitated the execution of these agreements.
The resolution was passed with 55 votes in favour, while 11 members, all from the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), opposed it. The Finance Committee also declared that settlements made between 2019 and 2023 were invalid. It instructed the Attorney General and relevant authorities to reclaim items tied to these settlements and investigate any compensation payments made outside the Finance Act to recover misappropriated funds.
Between 2018 and 2023, the administration is alleged to have allocated 36 islands, six lagoons, and over MVR 2 billion to various parties under questionable circumstances. Additionally, MVR 61.2 million was processed for payments to Le Triveni JV and Deebaja Investment. The release of these funds was suspended earlier this year following a directive from the Attorney General's Office.
The investigation aims to address these allegations and ensure accountability for the alleged financial misconduct.
