The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Rules has decided to consult key stakeholders regarding the current amount prescribed for child support expenses in the Maldives. These stakeholders include the Ministry of Social and Family Development, the Family Court, the Department of Judicial Administration, and a relevant NGO.

The issue was raised by Mohamed Ibrahim, an MP from Galolhu Uthuru Constituency, during a recent meeting of the Rules Committee. He pointed out that the existing regulations set child support at MVR 2,000 per month for one child and a minimum of MVR 1,000 per month for each additional child.

According to the regulations, parents are also required to cover additional costs, such as two uniforms, a pair of shoes, school supplies, and other educational materials annually. Furthermore, the child’s medical expenses must be paid, with government medical rates being used as a guideline.

Ibrahim argued that the current MVR 2,000 monthly support is insufficient to meet the rising costs of living. He noted that essential expenses, such as food, diapers, school fees, and tuition fees, often exceed this amount. He also highlighted the financial burden on single parents, who are already struggling to manage with the limited support provided. The lengthy court proceedings further exacerbate the challenges, delaying much-needed assistance.

He urged the Rules Committee to engage with stakeholders and revise the regulations to better reflect the current economic realities. Ibrahim emphasised that updating these rules would provide more meaningful financial relief to families in need.

The initiative underscores the importance of addressing outdated policies to support vulnerable members of society, particularly children from broken families.
