MDP National Council has pledged to assist in re-electing members who lose their seats due to advocating for people's rights or signing for MDP.
MDP made this decision through a resolution proposed at a National Council meeting held before the party's gathering in the Carnival area tonight under the name 'Qanoon Asaaseege Dhifaaugai'.
Presenting the resolution, MDP's Kolamaafushi Constituency President Mahfooz Saeed said that the amendment brought to the constitution by the parliament with the government's super majority is unconstitutional.
In the resolution, Mahfooz stated that Article 4 of the Constitution stipulates that all powers of the state originate from, and remain with, the people. He said that with the current amendment, the empowerment given to the people by that article is being taken away. He also mentioned in his resolution that the amendment violates Article 75 of the Constitution, which states that the work of the members of the parliament should be based on the interests of the whole country.
Furthermore, Article 90 of the Constitution states that no member shall be subject to any inquiry for anything said or any vote given in the People's Majlis.
Therefore, he said that this amendment is taking away people's empowerment, removing the freedom of parliament members to work in the interest of the people, and is also against the basic framework of the Constitution.
The resolution he proposed calls on both the parliament and the government to revert the constitutional amendment to its original state. It also calls on the MDP to assist in re-electing any member who loses their seat due to advocating for people's rights or signing for MDP.
"If a member of parliament loses their seat due to words spoken or actions taken in advocating for people's rights, or due to being expelled from their political party for their voting behavior, or for joining the Maldivian Democratic Party to participate in the work this party is doing in the interest of the people, we agree that the MDP will support that member if they contest in the by-election held for that constituency, and work with that member to re-elect them to the People's Majlis," the resolution states.
The resolution also calls for the MDP to take the initiative to expand this movement and protest in different parts of the country, and to invite other political parties, civil society organizations, and professionals to participate in this cause.
This resolution was passed unanimously by all 89 members present at tonight's National Council meeting.
Additionally, MDP's Galolhu North Constituency President Mariya Ahmed Didi has also submitted a petition. The petition states that the amendment to the Constitution, which weakens its power, was made without seeking public opinion and will change the system of governance to a mixed system, undoing the decision made by the people.
"As citizens empowered by Article 4 of the Constitution of the Republic of Maldives, we order and command the people's representatives and the people's servant, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, who has been entrusted by the Maldivian people to govern the Maldives, to nullify this amendment made to the Constitution without the consent of the people, and to refrain from doing anything that could take away people's empowerment," the petition states.
Signing of this petition began tonight and will continue throughout the country. Mariya has requested as many people as possible to sign the petition.
