The deadline for waiving penalties on unpaid electricity bills is rapidly approaching, according to a statement issued by State Electric Company (STELCO) on Monday. This follows President Mohamed Muizzu’s decision to offer relief for unpaid electricity bills incurred between 1 April and this year.

STELCO confirmed that domestic consumers can settle their outstanding bills without penalties if they pay the remaining dues by the end of this year. This relaxation applies exclusively to domestic users and does not extend to businesses or other service categories.

However, the company warned that penalties would be reinstated for unpaid bills starting 1 January next year if dues remain unpaid by the end-of-year deadline.

Consumers seeking further clarification or assistance can contact STELCO’s hotline at 1545 or email [email protected].

This waiver follows earlier initiatives by President Muizzu to reduce utility costs. During the last fasting month, a total discount of MVR 142 million was granted on electricity and water bills. At a recent meeting in Mathiveri, the President announced plans to exempt electricity and water bills entirely during the upcoming fasting month, continuing his administration’s focus on easing the cost of living for citizens.

Residents are urged to act quickly to benefit from these waivers before the deadline passes.
