An emergency motion has been submitted in the Maldivian Parliament, calling for an investigation and action against a Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) member over remarks allegedly inciting violence against President Dr Mohamed Muizzu.

The motion was presented by Milandhoo MP Hassan Mufeed Abdul Qadir, who condemned the statement suggesting that President Dr Muizzu should face a fate similar to that of former President Mohamed Amin.

In his address, MP Mufeed stressed that President Dr Muizzu was democratically elected by the people under the Constitution. Any suggestion or encouragement of actions contrary to constitutional provisions is unacceptable and dangerous, he added.

He further highlighted that the remarks, made during public gatherings by MDP members, could be interpreted as incitement to terrorism.

"The Anti-Terrorism Act clearly states that inciting, encouraging, or facilitating acts of terrorism, whether directly or indirectly, is a punishable offence. Such statements not only threaten the life of the President but also aim to instil fear and promote a political ideology through unlawful means," Mufeed asserted.

The motion urged authorities to investigate the matter and take appropriate legal action, citing the need to uphold the rule of law and maintain public safety.

The Parliament voted to proceed with a debate on the issue, with 44 out of 54 members present supporting the motion. Eight members voted in favour of further discussion, underscoring the gravity of the allegations.

The incident has sparked a heated debate about political rhetoric and its implications for national security, with many calling for accountability to ensure such statements do not undermine the country’s democratic and constitutional framework.
