On the occasion of the National Fishermen's Day, President Dr Mohamed Muizzu paid tribute to the resilience and dedication of Maldivian fishermen, emphasising their crucial role in the country's economy and heritage.
In a message shared on X, President Dr Muizzu said, fishermen work night and day in the vast seas, undeterred by challenges like harsh weather or long hours. It is our national duty to honour their contribution.
During an official visit to Alif Alif Atoll, the President highlighted his administration's efforts to strengthen the fisheries sector. He underscored the sector's importance, stating fishing is vital to the Maldives' economy, and the government is committed to supporting it.
A major promise by President Dr Muizzu — ensuring fishermen are paid within 48 hours of their catch — has now been fulfilled. This commitment was realised through a three-part agreement signed between the Ministry of Finance, the Maldives Industrial Fisheries Company (MIFCO), and the Bank of Maldives (BML). From today onwards, payments for catches deposited in BML accounts will be processed within 48 hours, streamlining financial support for fishermen.
Additionally, MIFCO cleared pending payments amounting to MVR 380 million, addressing long-standing delays.
In further support of the sector, arrangements have been made for fishermen to access fuel at State Trading Organisation (STO) rates through FSM facilities, reducing operational costs.
President Dr Muizzu reaffirmed his vision to elevate the fishing industry to match the economic impact of tourism, ensuring a sustainable and prosperous future for the nation’s fishing communities.
