The Maldivian Parliament has passed a bill to amend the Penal Code, criminalising cybercrime and enabling international cooperation for legal assistance in cyber-related cases.

The bill, introduced by Maafushi MP Hussain Riza Adam on behalf of the government, adds new provisions to address computer-related offences under Section 240 of the Penal Code. These include unauthorised access to computer systems, interception and misuse of computer data, cyber violence, computer-related forgery and fraud, and violations of copyright and related rights.

Acts of cyber violence, such as the publication or distribution of explicit images of children using computer systems, have also been criminalised under the bill. However, access to computer systems with court orders or other lawful authorisations is exempt from these provisions.

The amendment enables the exchange of information and electronic evidence with international organisations and foreign authorities, addressing the growing complexity and prevalence of cybercrime.

The new legislation underscores the Maldives' commitment to combating cybercrime and enhancing collaboration with global partners to address emerging threats in cyberspace.
