Maldives has called on the International Court of Justice (ICJ) to assist vulnerable nations like itself in combating the impacts of climate change. This plea comes as part of a broader effort to seek clarity on the responsibilities of countries under international law regarding climate change.

The United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) referred the case to the ICJ, requesting its advisory opinion under Article 65 of the ICJ Statute. Hearings began today, with the Maldives represented by Attorney General Ahmed Usham.

In his statement, Usham emphasised the Maldives’ vulnerability to climate change and urged international cooperation to address its devastating effects. He highlighted the responsibility of developed nations under international environmental laws to support small island developing states like the Maldives in mitigating and adapting to these challenges.

Usham reaffirmed the Maldives’ commitment to collaborating with the global community to address climate change impacts. He also expressed strong opposition to any future relocation of Maldivian island communities due to environmental degradation, emphasising the government’s determination to protect its people and their homeland.

The Maldives' appeal at the ICJ underscores the urgent need for global accountability and action to safeguard nations most at risk from climate change.
