Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) Chairperson and former Economy Minister Fayyaz Ismail has called for collective action to safeguard constitutional rights and counter what he described as the growing risk of tyranny. Speaking at a meeting titled "Qanoon Asaasee ge Dhifaauga - Bodu Salla", held at the party’s headquarters last night, Fayyaz encouraged citizens to come together and challenge the current administration's alleged overreach.

Fayyaz noted that the path ahead would not be easy or short, emphasising the importance of public awareness and active resistance to protect democratic values. He urged Maldivians to attend a protest event scheduled for 10 December at the Carnival area, describing it as a critical step in raising their collective voice against the government.

He expressed dissatisfaction with attempts to engage the administration constructively, suggesting that the government had not fulfilled its responsibilities despite outward signs of public support. Fayyaz pointed out that the current situation appeared to undermine the significant progress made in the past three decades.

Fayyaz also indicated that the MDP would not stand idly by if the government attempted to roll back constitutional rights, which had been achieved through years of struggle and sacrifice. Reflecting on the party’s time in power, he acknowledged past oversights but affirmed the party’s commitment to resisting any efforts to dismantle democratic gains.

His remarks underscore the MDP's intention to position itself as a defender of constitutional integrity and a protector of the people’s rights, rallying public support to confront perceived threats to the nation’s democracy.
