President Dr Mohamed Muizzu extended his heartfelt greetings on Huravee Day, underscoring the importance of loyalty and faithfulness to the nation. In a social media post, the President reflected on the values symbolised by the day, which serves as a reminder of national devotion and the distinction between faithful and unfaithful service to one’s country.
The President also paid tribute to Sultan Hassan Izzuddin, widely known as Dhon Bandaarain, whose leadership during the Maldives’ liberation from South Indian invaders in 1752 is celebrated with pride.
Huravee Day, observed annually on the third day of Jumad-ul-Ahira in the Islamic calendar, commemorates Dhon Bandaarain’s heroism in leading a four-month battle against the Malabari invaders. Born on the island of Huraa in Kaafu Atoll, his steadfast leadership and eventual victory freed the Maldives from foreign rule, cementing his legacy as a national hero.
The term “Huravee” originates from Sultan Hassan Izzuddin’s Huraa heritage, symbolising his remarkable leadership. Despite being offered the crown after the victory, Dhon Bandaarain chose to lead the nation temporarily, demonstrating his selflessness. He only accepted the throne following the death of Sultan Mukarram Muhammad Imaduddin III, ruling the Maldives with honour and loyalty until 1180 AH.
Huravee Day stands as a tribute to Dhon Bandaarain’s courage and patriotism, reminding Maldivians of the sacrifices made for independence. It is a time to reflect on the enduring values of leadership, loyalty, and the unyielding spirit of those who fought for the nation’s freedom.
