The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has started investigating allegations of fraud involving the National Social Protection Agency (NSPA) over the purchase of a building for its headquarters.
The issue arose after NSPA announced plans to acquire office space. Social media claims suggest the agency paid MVR 34.8 million to someone other than the building's landlord. These claims have sparked public concern and calls for transparency.
ACC media official Aishath Sama confirmed that the case is under investigation. “A case has been registered, and we have started an investigation,” she said.
NSPA CEO Heena Waleed called the allegations "baseless rumours" in a letter to ACC President Adam Shamil. She asked for a thorough and independent investigation to clear doubts and ensure transparency.
On the same day, NSPA denied the allegations, stating that all dealings regarding the building were conducted properly with the Finance Ministry. They also rejected claims of hiring employees for private purposes, asserting that all recruitment follows official procedures.
NSPA plans to take action against those spreading false information and assured the public of its commitment to integrity and transparency as the ACC’s investigation proceeds.
