Amidst ongoing discussions to amend the Maldives Immigration Act, the Parliamentary Committee on National Security (241 Committee) is exploring proposals to impose a targeted ban on Israeli government officials instead of a blanket ban on all Israeli passport holders. The amendment comes in response to concerns raised over Israel's actions in Gaza.
The Maldives Association of Travel Agents and Tour Operators (MATATO) has called for a measured approach, suggesting that only Israeli officials be restricted from entry. MATATO President Abdulla Iyaz noted during Monday's committee meeting that while the association supports the principle of the proposed ban, no detailed studies or resource assessments have been conducted on the matter.
Iyaz emphasised the importance of relying on input from association members and international counterparts for a nuanced stance. "It’s a sensitive issue, and a targeted approach seems more practical," he said.
Similarly, the Guesthouse Association has voiced its support for a targeted ban, suggesting that barring Israeli leaders from entering the Maldives would be a more balanced approach than a blanket restriction on all Israeli passport holders.
The committee continues to consult various stakeholders as it deliberates amendments to the immigration law.
