The Parliament's Committee on Independent Institutions has raised serious allegations against three members of the Election Commission (EC), including Vice President Ali Nashath, Mohamed Asif, and Dr Mohamed Zahir, proposing their removal from the commission.

In a report submitted to Parliament, the committee claimed that the three members were involved in corrupt activities, including collaborating with businesses to obtain computer systems for the EC through a private company. The report also accused Nashath of using abusive language when communicating with EC staff and of making statements that downplayed corruption within the commission.

Further allegations suggest that Nashath, Asif, and Zahir used their positions to influence commission employees, with accusations of providing food and other benefits in exchange for loyalty. There were also claims that Nashat attempted to block the formation of a political party by leaking a list of members to the then President’s Office.

The report goes on to allege that Nashath had inappropriate relationships with certain employees and threatened those not involved in corrupt activities. Additionally, the three members were accused of creating fraudulent applications using EC data, selling them to political parties, and manipulating the registration process during the presidential election.

The committee’s findings also include allegations of financial misconduct, with claims that members tried to obstruct a political party’s growth and misrepresented their attendance records. The report further alleges that personal data from the EC’s database was sold to the public.

These allegations have prompted the committee to recommend the removal of Nashath, Asif, and Zahir from the Election Commission, urging Parliament to take action.
