Government is set to establish Education Centres for Excellence across the country to enhance the professional capabilities of teachers and school principals. Minister of Education Dr Ismail Shafiu announced that improving teacher skills would be a top priority for the education sector next year. These centres will focus on providing essential professional development and making school evaluation processes more efficient.
In addition to this, the Education Ministry is planning to replace the current student record-keeping system, MEMES, with a more advanced platform. This new system will enable better management of student and teacher data, allowing information to be shared with relevant agencies when necessary. The minister noted that this change would streamline operations and improve data accuracy.
The initiative to increase the number of Maldivian teachers, a key pledge by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu, is also underway. A programme launched last month aims to train 150 local teachers annually to address the growing need for qualified educators.
To support these efforts, the government has allocated MVR 6.1 billion for the education sector in the 2024 budget. These initiatives mark a significant step toward improving education standards and supporting the professional growth of teachers across the Maldives.
