President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has commended the constitutional amendments passed by the People's Majlis, describing them as essential for safeguarding the nation's independence and sovereignty while fostering peace and stability.

In a video message last night, President Dr Muizzu highlighted key changes, including the requirement for a three-fourths parliamentary majority to approve any alterations to the country’s territory. This strengthens the previous two-thirds threshold, ensuring greater protection of the Maldives' boundaries, including its Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ). Additionally, any territorial changes now require public consent through a referendum.

The President also emphasised the amendment mandating parliamentary approval for the presence of foreign military forces in the Maldives. He noted that this provision reinforces national control over such decisions.

Speaking on the introduction of anti-defection laws, President Dr Muizzu stressed their importance in maintaining political stability. These laws will disqualify Members of Parliament who defect from their party, join another party, or, in the case of independents, align with a political party after election.

The President praised the inclusion of provisions enabling short- and long-term development planning, which he said would ensure a clear vision for the Maldives' progress.

Concluding his address, President Dr Muizzu thanked Parliament for making what he called "decisive, national-spirited" changes. He expressed confidence that these amendments would strengthen the Maldives' independence, sovereignty, and stability, serving the best interests of its people.
