The Bar Council has called on Parliament to allow it to share its views on a set of constitutional amendment bills proposed by the government.

The amendments, introduced by Hulhudhoo MP Mohamed Shahid, include provisions to disqualify lawmakers if they switch parties or if an independent member joins a political party. Another amendment grants the president the authority to define state policies, issue directives to government institutions, and outline national development plans. The third amendment requires parliamentary approval for the deployment of foreign troops for military purposes in the Maldives.

In a statement, the Bar Council expressed concerns over the proposed changes, highlighting that both legal professionals and the public should have a chance to contribute to such significant amendments. The Council urged Parliament to ensure adequate consultation and allow its members to present their perspectives.

The Speaker of Parliament, Abdul Raheem Abdulla, has scheduled a session for 5:30 p.m. to vote on the amendment that would disqualify lawmakers for switching parties.
