The Information Commissioner’s Office (ICOM) has directed the Defence Ministry to disclose details about Indian civilians in the Maldives who are operating military helicopters donated by India.
The request was initiated under the Right to Information (RTI) Act by the online newspaper Anaqat. When the Defence Ministry refused to provide the information, the matter was escalated to ICOM. Information Commissioner Ahmed Ahid Rasheed has since written to the ministry, asking it to release the details within the official five-day timeframe.
The presence of Indian personnel in the Maldives to operate the helicopters has been a point of public interest. President Dr Mohamed Muizzu, in line with a campaign pledge, confirmed that Indian soldiers who were previously operating the helicopters have been repatriated following discussions with India.
Foreign Minister Moosa Zameer clarified that the individuals currently operating the helicopters are civilians employed by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), the manufacturer of the helicopters. This change aligns with efforts to address public concerns over foreign military presence in the country.
Further updates are awaited as the Defence Ministry responds to the ICOM’s directive.
