Hura MP Dr Anara Naeem has stated that MPs who defect from their parties should be disqualified based on a vote from their constituents. She made this comment during a parliamentary debate on a proposed constitutional amendment that would make it mandatory for MPs to lose their seats if they switch political parties.
She added that while the amendment calls for MPs who defect should lose their seats, it should be carried out through an electoral process to uphold integrity and trust of constituents.
The bill, introduced by Hulhudhoo MP Mohamed Shahid on behalf of the government, proposes disqualifying MPs if they voluntarily leave their political party, are expelled, or join another party during their term. It also includes provisions to disqualify independent MPs if they join a political party after being elected.
This amendment builds on the anti-defection law enacted by the 19th Parliament, which requires MPs to resign from their party within seven days under certain circumstances. However, the current law does not outline consequences for non-compliance, and this issue is currently being reviewed in court.
The debate highlights growing concerns about party-switching and its impact on parliamentary integrity, with lawmakers divided over the proposed measures. Further discussions are expected as the bill moves forward in parliament.
