The government has appealed the Employment Tribunal's decision to reinstate Aishath Jennifer, the former Deputy Managing Director of Island Aviation Services (IAS), to the High Court.

Jennifer was appointed to her position on 25 December 2018 during President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih's administration. However, after President Dr Mohamed Muizzu took office, the IAS board decided to terminate her on 28 December 2023, and the dismissal was formalised on 3 January 2024. Jennifer challenged the decision, claiming it was unlawful.

The Employment Tribunal ruled in Jennifer's favour, stating that her termination lacked sufficient grounds and was illegal. The tribunal ordered IAS to reinstate her and pay her all salaries, benefits, and allowances from the time of her dismissal. Additionally, IAS was directed to pay her MVR 57,171 as compensation for financial losses and report compliance to the tribunal within three days of completing the process.

The state, disagreeing with the ruling, filed an appeal with the High Court last week. The court has yet to decide whether to accept the case. This development underscores the ongoing disputes surrounding employment decisions in state-owned enterprises during government transitions.
