President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has announced plans to construct 15,000 housing units in the Malé area and 12,940 units across 41 islands in the atolls next year.
Speaking at a ceremony marking the government's first year in office, the President revealed that a total of MVR 2.5 billion has been allocated for housing in the upcoming fiscal year, a figure unmatched by any previous government.
The planned housing units will be spread across several islands, with significant developments in the atolls. Some of the major housing projects include:
- 3,000 units in Kulhudhuffushi City
- 750 units in Naifaru
- 500 units in Kudahuvadhoo
- 1,000 units in Gan
- 1,000 units in Addu City
- 500 units in Fuvahmulah City
- 500 units in Thinadhoo City
In addition, the China Sinohydro has been awarded the contract to build 1,000 housing units in Eydhafushi, which will feature 15-storey towers with two- and three-bedroom flats.
The government also plans to implement two social housing projects in Hulhumalé as part of the "Transforming Tomorrow" initiative, which will provide 2,100 housing units.
Furthermore, the Rasmale' project will see the construction of 65,000 housing units, adding to the government's commitment to addressing the growing demand for housing across the country.
