Auditor General Hussain Niyazy has revealed that the Maldivian state has missed out on MVR 23.6 billion in revenue since 2022, largely due to challenges faced by the Maldives Inland Revenue Authority (MIRA) in enforcing collections.

Speaking at a Budget Committee meeting on the proposed 2025 state budget, Niyazy reported that MIRA was owed MVR 5.9 billion in 2022, MVR 7.7 billion by June 2023, and MVR 10 billion as of June this year, indicating a growing trend.

Niyazy noted that MIRA’s limited legal and administrative powers hinder its ability to enforce collections effectively, and he called for enhanced legal authority to address the issue.
