President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has ratified the First Amendment to the Tobacco Control Act, passed by Parliament on 12 November 2024. The amendment bans the import, sale, free distribution, and use of e-cigarettes, vaping devices, and related products in the Maldives.
Key provisions include:
- Prohibiting tobacco use in all government buildings and premises.
- Imposing fines on users and property owners if tobacco is used illegally in business or service areas, with possible suspension of smoking permits and business licences.
- Banning the sale of tobacco products to anyone under 21, including requiring ID verification for buyers.
- Prohibiting tobacco advertising, public display of tobacco products, and use of tobacco products in promotions or sponsorships.
- Banning the cultivation, production, or import of tobacco plants and seeds, as well as any manufacturing of tobacco products in the Maldives.
Fines are set for violations. The amendment has been published in the Government Gazette, with e-cigarette and vaping device rules effective from 15 December 2024, and all other provisions effective from 15 November 2024.
