President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has announced that construction of the Maldives' first dedicated cancer hospital will begin in 2025, marking a major advancement in the nation's healthcare.

Speaking at the Republic Day ceremony, he emphasised that cancer care requires a specialised facility rather than being limited to general hospital services. He assured that planning is underway, with consultations with key partners progressing rapidly.

The President also reiterated plans for a mental health hospital in Laamu and a specialised facility for women and children in Hulhumale’. He highlighted upgrades at Dharumavantha Hospital and Hulhumale’ Hospital, both set to become tertiary-level institutions by mid-November.

On infrastructure, he noted progress in the transport sector, including RTL service expansion across all provinces by 2025 and ongoing work on sustainable airports. Recognising road congestion, he mentioned new initiatives in Malé and Villimalé and announced that bridge projects in 2025 will better connect islands for economic growth.
