The Maldives has officially launched its National Teacher Training Programme, aimed at addressing the ongoing shortage of qualified teachers in the country.
The programme was inaugurated by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu, who presented scholarship letters to the first batch of students. This initiative targets secondary school graduates, with over 135 students enrolled this year, to provide specialized training for future educators.
The programme focuses on equipping participants with essential skills and knowledge, particularly in subjects where teacher shortages are most acute.
Education Minister Dr Ismail Shafiu and other officials attended the ceremony, underscoring the government's commitment to building a sustainable, locally trained teaching workforce. This project is a key part of President Dr Muizzu’s pledge to improve the education sector and meet the demand for over 2,000 new teachers, with a particular focus on primary education.
