In a recent interview on Raajje TV’s Fashaa Iru programme, former Maldivian President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom attributed the country's current challenges to the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), criticising its influence on national issues.

According to Yameen, the MDP holds significant responsibility for what he described as a “deteriorating” situation, yet he dismissed any intentions of collaborating with them to disrupt the current administration.

Yameen expressed mistrust towards the MDP, stating that while the party had implemented some positive initiatives, he does not believe it prioritises the people’s welfare. He further asserted that under MDP’s influence, the Maldives has become overly dependent on external nations, specifically India, which he claimed compromises national sovereignty.

The former president also ruled out any potential alliance with MDP, citing ideological differences and recalling past harassment he endured during their rule. For these reasons, Yameen affirmed that he sees no grounds for aligning politically with the MDP in the future.
