Parliament has approved the appointment of Fathimath Ameeza as Deputy Commissioner General of Taxation.
Her appointment was unanimously approved by Parliament, with 64 out of 66 lawmakers present at the session voting in favour of her appointment.
Ameeza’s appointment comes after the term of the previous Deputy Commissioner General, Asma Shafiu, ended on October 31. President Mohamed Muizzu had submitted two names for the position to Parliament, and Ameeza was chosen following a vote. However, not all members of Parliament were in agreement, as Asma Shafiu, did not cast a vote in favour of Ameeza.
Under the tax administration law, the Maldives Inland Revenue Authority (MIRA) operates a seven-member board, including the tax commissioner and deputy tax commissioner. Board members serve a tenure of five years. Ameeza's appointment marks a key leadership change within MIRA as the country continues to strengthen its taxation and revenue systems.
