President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has said the country's democratic system should be built on the basis of Islam and cultural values.

The President made the remarks on Sunday in a post shared on X on the occasion of International Day of Democracy

"The democratic process in the running of the country must be built on the values of Islam and the cultural values of the country," the president's post read.

International Day of Democracy is observed every year on September 15.

The Maldives is still in early stages of democracy. The country held its first multi-party presidential election in 2008.
