Fathimath Dheema Ali and Ahyar Ahmed Khalid, have won the first division title of the 62nd National Table Tennis Tournament on Friday.
This is Dheema's fifth consecutive title in the National TT Tournament. Dheema, who qualified for this year's Olympics and earned the country a huge reputation, also competed against Aishath Rafa Nazim in the national final this year. The National TT tournament which began on 2 September saw Dheema and Rafa in the first division finals.
Apart from being the first division champion, Dheema has also won the u-19 women's singles title, u-19 mixed doubles title and first division women's doubles title. Dheema won the mixed doubles title with Ahyar. She won the women's doubles title and was followed by Mishka Mohammad Ibrahim.
Ahiyar won his first national title today with a 4-3 win over last TT Association Cup winner Moosa Munsif Ahmed. Ahiyar took the first three sets 12-10, 11-1 and 11-8 but Munsif took the next three. He took the sets 11-8, 11-6 and 11-5. That's when the game got intense and the tie went into a break set. In that set, Ahiyar fought under pressure to take the set 11-7 to seal the national title.
Apart from this, Ahiyar also won the U-19 title and first division mixed doubles runner-up at the national championships. Ahiyar's mixed doubles partner is Dheema. The mixed doubles pair of Munsif and Rafa won the mixed doubles title this time.
Other champions of the tournament include the under-13 boys and women's champions Mohammad Zaym Ahmed and Aishath Alsa Nafiz, the under-15 champions are Umir Mohammad Muiz and Aishath Alsa Mafeez. The under-17 singles champions are Mishka Mohamed Ibrahim and Zeek Hasan Latheef.
