Former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom has stated that Maldivians who take part in civil wars of other countries could not be considered 'jihadists'.

During the first Ihya Programme by Maumoon Foundation on Tuesday night, President Maumoon spoke about 'Islam and Jihad'. Vice President Faisal Naseem and several cabinet Ministers was present during the programme.

Speaking during the programme, the former strongman highlighted on serious cases such as the bombings in Sri Lanka this past month, and noted that such acts could not be referred to as jihad. He stated that ‘jihad’ means defending one’s country and religion while in one’s own country, and therefore Maldivians battling in other countries cannot be considered as such.

In addition to this, President Maumoon siad that, “Going to jihad is obligatory only when an Islamic country is being invaded and attacked by non-Muslims. Initiating conflict is not permitted in Islam, neither is waging war on a peaceful country”.

“Every Muslim can go to jihad in their own country. If an enemy country were to attack us, we would be obligated to defend ourselves, our country and our religion”.

Even during the time of Jihad, there are strict guidelines to be followed. Speaking about these, the former President said that it included the prohibition of harming those who are not part of the battle, such as the elderly, the sick, women and children.
