Chinese President Xi Jinping has assured the Maldives of all necessary assistance in boosting the economy of the country, Foreign Minister Moosa Zameer said on Wednesday.

A senior government delegation, including Minister Zameer, visited China last week and held talks with Chinese officials and some private companies. During the visit, President Dr Mohahmed Muizzu also sent a special letter to Chinese President Xi Jinping.

In a program on Aslu TV, Minister Zameer said China's President has assured the Maldives of full cooperation to improve the economy.

"President Xi has informed the President that China will do everything it can to help the Maldives overcome these [economic difficulties] and that the technical parts will be carried out from now on," he said.

The minister said the President's steps to solve Maldives' economic problems are accepted by the world, especially India who is already assisting the country.

"India is very sensitive to our difficulties. India has a neighborhood first policy. India is very helpful in our difficulties," he said.

The minister added that the previous government had managed the economy of the country poorly. He said the MDP government has not pursued any strong policy in recovering billions of rufiyaa owed to the state.
