Ministry of Finance and Treasury has released MVR 8 million to the opposition party, PPM.
The funds are from the those that were frozen from the MVR 18 million for the party included in last year’s annual state budget.
Although the law states that funds for political parties have to be given within the first three months of the year, the funds were withheld due to a leadership dispute in the party at the time.
Following a dispute between the former President of the Maldives and the former President of PPM, Maumoon Abdul Gayoom and then President of the country, Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom, Maumoon was forced out of the leadership and he went to court to regain the leadership.
The Elections Commission, too, asked the Finance Minsitry to release the funds at different phases of the court case.
Notifying PPM, the Finance Ministry sent a letter stating the releasing of funds were delayed because it was not funds included in this year’s budget.
One Online has been unable to get a confirmation from PPM that the funds have been released.
