A road map has been launched regarding the reform and ensuring the independence of the judiciary.

Chief Justice Dr. Abdulla Didi launched the roadmap during a special event held at the Islamic Center tonight. A total of 20 items were included in the road map.

• Conference on Judicial Independence and Reform

• Reforming Judicial Services Commission

• Reforming the law

• Strengthening the removal and appointment of justices

• Ensuring that the judiciary was free from any type of influence

• Strengthening the system to make justices accountable, without risking independence of judiciary

• Establishing an easy procedure to submit public complaints

• Strengthening and enforcing a system to track work quality of justices

• Establishing a system to promote judges

• Strengthening the access to justice system and verdict enforcement

• Strengthening judicial case management system

• Establishing the superior court in all cities

• Modernizing and strengthening the judicial administration

• Increasing use of technology and e-fling usage

• Ensuring financial independence of the judiciary

• Strengthening continued judicial and legal education system

• Introduction of in-service services to freshen up justices

• Strengthening judicial and law education system

• Strengthening legal profession

• Introducing a public defender’s scheme

• Introducing a stronger legal aid system

In addition to this, a public defenders office would be established to provide legal aid to those who need it. This would reduce the time wasted for not being able to appoint a prosecutor.
