Several evidence and witnesses have been presented against former President Abdulla Yameen, during the hearing of his money laundering trial today.
Witnesses against President Yameen include Former Vice President Ahmed Adeeb, Former MD of MMPRC, Abdulla Ziyath, Former Tourism Minister Moosa Zameer in addition to President of ACC Hassan Luthufee and Vice President of ACC Muawwiz Rasheed and some board members of BML.
Speaking during the hearing, President Yameen noted that it was unclear as to why the charges were being pressed against him. As such, he questioned as to what his crime was exactly. He had denied any relation to the MMPRC Corruption Scandal and said that the money in question was one that was transferred to him from an account of SOF.
Answering his question about what his exact crime was, state prosecutor responded that the charges were being pressed with suspicion of corruption and being involved in the MMPRC corruption scandal. The state had also presented President Yameen’s statement during the hearing.
President Yameen is being charged with money laundering, in relation to the MVR 1.4 corruption scandal which rocked his presidency. According to the charges pressed against him, he had received and successfully laundered USD 1 million from the embezzled money from MMPRC.
He was ordered to be remanded till end of trial in case he tampered with evidence related to the case on February 18th. However, the criminal court’s verdict was short lived as the High Court ruled in favor of his appeal, freeing him on May 28th.
