Islamic State (IS) have officially claimed responsibility for the terrorist attacks that rattled Sri Lanka on Sunday, killing nearly 300 people.

Reuters India confirmed in a tweet sent out on Tuesday that the terror group had taken responsibility for the bomb blasts in Sri Lanka, via their news agency ‘Amaq’.

Even though IS has claimed the attack – without any evidence to their claim – Sri Lankan Mass Media Minister had previously said that local National Tawheed Jamaat was behind the attack.

The Sri Lankan prime minister, Ranil Wickremesinghe, has said some bombers had travelled abroad. He said it was “possible” the bombings were a response to the Christchurch mosque attack in New Zealand, but did not reiterate the defence minister’s claim.

Death toll in the attacks have now climbed to 321 which includes 38 foreigners as well.
