The Maldives has gone up by 22 positions on the annual World Press Freedom Index by Reporters Without Borders.

On the 2018 index, the Maldives was on the 120th place and with a 22 position bump, the country is now on 98th place on the index. This is the biggest leap since the country was included on the index on 2013.

Initially, the Maldives was on 103rd place and lost five positions the following year to 108th. And on 2015, it was the 112th place and continued to go down.

Since President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom took office, Reports Without Borders has said that the freedom of journalism was annually reduced every year. And when President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih took office, the state of free journalism is improving in the Maldives.
