The Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) has elected Jeehan Mahmood as the President of the Democracy and Human Rights Committee.

Jeehan was elected to the committee in 2021 as Maldives' elected member. Hence, she is also the first Maldivian to be elected as the President of the committee.

The Inter-Parliamentary Union, an international organization, has been in existence since 1889. The purpose of the union is to promote democratic governance of the countries' legislatures, increase the chances of women members getting seats in parliament, and encourage young people to enter politics.

The IPU represents 150 legislatures around the world.

The IPU's Democracy and Human Rights Committee is one of the most important standing committees of the organization. This is the Committee on the Promotion of Democracy and Human Rights.

Jeehan is the Chairman of the Human Rights and Gender Committee of the Parliament.
