19th Parliament is set to review the renumeration of justices in the Maldives, as per a decision by the Parliament Committee on Finance of the current 18th Parliament.
Following discussions about the Judicial Services Commission’s submission to review justices renumeration, the committee decided to handover the task to the 19th Parliament since there were only a handful of days left for the current term to end.
In the letter sent out by the JSC to the committee, it was noted that the current renumeration of justices were not fair, when keeping in the current living expenses and their responsibilities in question. As such, the letter noted that it was a rather small renumeration.
During discussions, some committee members had expressed concerns over the submission to increase the renumeration. As such, Feydhoo MP Ibrahim Didi said that justices were ones who are given great renumeration and job security. He noted that justices could retain their jobs for a lifetime if they perform without the influence of corruption.
North Kulhudhuffushi MP, AbdulQafoor Mohamed noted that the renumeration of the President, Parliament members and Justices are given under the framework finalised by the parliament in 2010. He added that the parliament was reviewing the government pay structure, and noted that any changes to renumeration will be brought under that.
