MDP Chairman and Economic Minister Fayyaz Ismail has denied allegations claiming that the party's MPs have asked President Ibrahim Mohammed Solih to remove him from the post.
The Democrats' parliamentary group leader, MP Ali Azim, tweeted yesterday that MDP parliamentary group held a meeting with President Ibrahim Mohammed Solih yesterday. At the meeting, the members requested the removal of Fayyaz from the post of MDP Chairman, Azim said.
Fayyaz told One Online today that he was also present at the meeting and that his removal from office was not discussed.
While Azim has claimed that MDP members were seeking to dismiss Fayyaz, The Democrats are saying that MDP failed in the presidential election because of Fayyaz and the MDP leadership. They are also saying that the MDP needs a new leadership.
Azim’s allegations come as MDP parliamentary group has decided to move a no-confidence motion against Speaker Mohamed Nasheed. The motion of no confidence in Nasheed was filed on the grounds that Nasheed is acting in a manner that is harmful to MDP.
