Hulhudhoo MP Ilyas Labeeb of The Democrats has introduced a constitutional amendment to change the current composition of the parliament and make it 76 members in the parliament.
Ilyas Labeeb said that the amendments were proposed to prevent the increase in the number of members at the end of each term of parliament and to reduce the increase in the budget and increase in public expenditure. included, he said.
Currently, the Parliament has 87 members, and the Parliament is divided to represent every 5,000 people. As such, at the end of each term of the Parliament the numbers are constituencies at the end of the elections.
Ilyas Labeeb proposed to keep the number of MPs at 76.
"We are proposing to elect 55 members from atolls to the Parliament. Additionally, there are very few female members in the Parliament. It is difficult for female members to come to parliament. Hence, we have decided to reserve two women seats in different parts of the country, especially north, west, central and south which only women can contest for. So, eight women will be accommodated. In addition to this, we are amending the constitution so that even those with disabilities can be represented in parliament by two elected parties," Said Ilyas Labeeb.
Ilyas Labeeb also said that in parliamentary elections, 11 members appointed by political parties as per the law will be represented as members of parliament.
Ilyas said that once the amendment comes to the Constitution, amendments to the electoral laws will also be placed before parliament and he will meet people from other political parties and other constituencies to pass the proposed amendments to the constitution.
